Endometriosis is a condition that causes very painful and often heavy periods. It occurs when small pieces of the womb lining appear outside the womb and can be found in areas such as the bladder, ovaries and fallopian tube. The condition can cause scar tissue in these areas and, in serious cases, leaves women with serous pelvic and abdomen pains.

6-10% of women suffer from endometriosis and it has become the second most common gynaecological problem in the UK.

The condition can cause scar tissue in these areas and, in serious cases, leaves women with serous pelvic and abdomen pains.

At a time when new methods of conceiving children are prominent in the news, this issue has also come to prominence again. With endometriosis one of the leading causes of infertility in women in the UK (Only 50% of sufferers go on to have children), attention has turned to ways in which to diagnose it sooner. Most diagnoses for it only come after about 10 years, when the woman is in her most active reproductive years (mid- 20’s).

Celebrities such as Emma Bunton and Anna Friel were both diagnosed in their mid-20’s, however, managed to overcome the condition to have children in their early 30’s respectively. Bunton was diagnosed at age 25, ‘I remember the doctor saying at the time: “Fifty per cent of women with endometriosis go on to have children.” I thought, only 50 per cent. It scared the life out of me.’

There is no sure-fire treatment that rids the issue completely however progress has been made in the area. Laser surgery can remove the scar tissue in damaged areas; however, it is often only surface tissue that is removed and severe pain can be back within months. Keyhole surgery can manually remove the scar tissue rather than laser it and is far more successful with 80% of patients needing no further treatment.
