What is a perineoplasty?

A perineoplasty is an operation to reconstruct and tighten the vaginal opening.

Why do some women choose to have a perineoplasty?

Many women experience a feeling of looseness or laxity during intercourse. This is usually due to stretching and tears of the vaginal opening during childbirth but may also be a consequence of aging. Women who experience this feeling of laxity often request surgery to tighten the vaginal opening, mainly to improve sexual satisfaction. Some women do not require surgical tightening and are suitable for non-surgical Viveve radio-frequency treatment.

The other reason some women request a perineoplasty is dissatisfaction with their cosmetic appearance after childbirth, often describing themselves as feeling ‘open’. This can impact greatly on self-confidence, especially with intimacy. This is a very common concern for women who often feel embarrassed raising it as an issue with their doctor. A perineoplasty operation can help with this issue, restoring the vaginal opening to a pre-childbirth appearance.

How is the surgery performed?

Perineoplasty is a surgical procedure to tighten and reshape the vaginal opening. A diamond shaped area of skin is removed and the muscles, soft tissues and skin are reconstructed with fine sutures. Surgery takes under 1 hour and is usually carried out as a day case procedure under general anaesthesia. Perineoplasty can be combined with surgical tightening of the vaginal canal if required (vaginoplasty).

How long does it take to recover?

Downtime after a perineoplasty is around 2 weeks. During this time it is best to wear loose clothing and avoid anything too strenuous. During this time you will usually need to take regular pain relief. Tampon insertion and intercourse should be avoided for at least 6 weeks. After this time you can usually resume normal activities. Healing is complete after 3-6 months.

What are the outcomes of perineoplasty?

In addition to the enhanced cosmetic appearance after perineoplasty, women often describe increased self-confidence and sexual satisfaction. The vast majority of women recover well from surgery without complications. However as with all surgery, there are risks such as bleeding, infection, wound breakdown, scarring, pain, and painful intercourse.
